McKinney, Texas – We Are Unique By Nature
McKinney has a unique, rich and diverse spirit due to the history that has shaped it into the city it is today. Over many years, the city leadership has had the vision of preserving its history in order to intentionally craft a town that offers the best of the old with a vibrant present and a promising future for its residents and visitors alike. McKinney’s deep history includes stories about the people who lived here, the work they did, and the places they called home.
The spaces we now know as Collin County were originally settled by pioneers and offered free land by colonizers like William S. Peters and associates. The State of Texas hired colonizers to introduce new settlers into this area, which was first called Peter’s Colony. The offer included 640 acres of land, a gun and assistance in building a cabin to live in. The first Peter’s Colony settlers came here in 1841. Settlers arrived at Peter’s Colony in wagons pulled by oxen or horses and braved the threats of dangerous weather, wild animals and native Indians for the promise of free land and a better life.
Collin County roots come from Fannin County, which originally encompassed most of Northeast Texas. In 1846, Colin County and several other counties were created from the original areas, each granted about 30 square miles. The Texas Legislature decreed that a county seat had to be within 3 miles of the center of the county so a horseback rider could get from one side of the county to the seat and back home in one day. Collin County was named after pioneer and land surveyor Collin McKinney, who helped draft and signed the Texas Declaration of Independence from Mexico in 1836.
Other than a home, the first thing established in McKinney was a local church in Wilmeth home in the spring of 1848. The first non-residential building was the Lovejoy Store, which was moved to the northwest corner of the square on May 3, 1848. In March of 1849, 120 acres from the William and Margaret Davis holdings were used for the new town, which was incorporated in 1849 and re-incorporated in 1859. Over the next approx. 50 years, cotton was a major source of revenue for the new Collin County. From 1870 to 1876, there were four cotton gins constructed in McKinney. In 1892, they began operation in the first cotton compress, which was still operating well into the mid 1980s.
