PROSPER, TEXAS – A PLACE WHERE EVERYONE MATTERS
The very first settlers arrived in Prosper in 1846 for the fertile black soil of North Texas where the key crop was cotton. Between 1850 and 1902 only two settlements existed and there was one community 2 miles south of the present town known as Rock Hill. The second community known as Richland was located 1 mile north of town. The development of these small communities expedited in 1876 when the County Courts ordered small tracts of land or be available for quick sale. Each tract which, was approximately 160 acres in size, were sold off for only $3.50 per acre. Dr A. T. Bryant of McKinney purchased one of these tracts which later became the geographic center for the Town of Prosper. The coming of the St. Louis and San Francisco Railroad in 1902 forced the communities of Rock Hill and Richland to merge firming
For many years, Prosper was the midway stop for the railroad that traveled between Dallas and Sherman. When community officials applied for a post office under the name “Richland”, they were informed that the city name was already taken. Postmaster B.J. Naugle asked for an alternative name and J.C. Slaughter suggested “Prosper” since the crops that year had been prosperous in the area. The Town of Prosper was incorporated in 1914 with a commission form government and small population of only 500 residents. For the next 49 years, U.N. Clary served as the mayor of Prosper, Texas.
